Cavalier (Cavaliere) Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Cavalier, also known as Cavaliere, is an exceptional Italian heirloom fig variety prized for its outstanding flavor, heavy production, and beautiful fruit. It has become a favorite among collectors and fig enthusiasts due to its combination of productivity, fruit quality, and reliability.

This variety produces medium to large figs with a beautiful purple to brown exterior color. As the fruit reaches peak ripeness, it often develops attractive cracking in the skin along with a honey drop at the eye, a sign that the fig is reaching maximum sweetness and flavor. Sweet berry flavor and juicy!! One of the best!

The flavor is exceptionally complex and rich. Cavalier delivers intense berry and cherry notes balanced by a pleasant citrus-honey tang. When fully ripened on the tree, the fruit becomes syrupy sweet with an outstanding seed crunch that many growers consider one of its defining characteristics.

Cavalier produces a single main crop and is not known for producing a breba crop. The fruit ripens from late summer into fall, making it a valuable mid-to-late season variety that extends the harvest season.

The tree is vigorous, highly productive, and performs well in a variety of growing conditions. It has demonstrated good resistance to splitting and spoilage, even during humid or rainy weather, helping maintain fruit quality when other varieties may struggle.

Many collectors consider Cavalier to be among the top figs for flavor. Its combination of productivity, unique appearance, exceptional taste, and Italian heritage has helped make it one of the more sought-after heirloom fig varieties available today.

For growers seeking a premium Italian fig with world-class flavor and excellent productivity, Cavalier is an outstanding addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones Possibly 7? I known zone 8-10 for sure.

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
