Description
Burgan UNK Fig Tree
Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)
About This Variety
Burgan UNK is a rare collector fig that I discovered growing in a residential yard. The homeowners were unaware of how the tree arrived there and believed it may have been planted by a previous owner many years earlier. Because the true identity and history of the variety remain unknown, it was given the name Burgan UNK.
After evaluating the fruit over multiple seasons, it became clear that this was a unique variety worthy of preservation and distribution. Since its introduction, Burgan UNK has gained attention among fig enthusiasts for its exceptional fruit quality, early ripening habit, and fascinating flavor variability.
One of the most fascinating characteristics of Burgan UNK is its ability to express dramatically different flavor profiles depending on growing conditions, climate, and pollination. Many growers describe the fruit as having a rich sugary berry flavor, while others report strong figgy honey notes. Some growers experience both flavor profiles from the same tree under different conditions.
This variability has made Burgan UNK a favorite among collectors who enjoy evaluating how a variety performs across different regions of the country. No matter the flavor expression, the fruit is consistently known for its sweetness, complexity, and excellent eating quality.
Burgan UNK is especially well known for demonstrating the dramatic differences that can occur between pollinated and unpollinated fruit. When pollinated, the figs can develop increased sweetness, improved texture, and additional flavor complexity, making it a fascinating variety for growers interested in comparing caprified and non-caprified fruit.
Burgan UNK is known for producing both a breba crop and a main crop. Many growers report successful breba harvests, although performance can vary depending on climate and growing conditions. In my collection, the breba crop often drops before ripening, but the main crop more than makes up for it.
One of the standout characteristics of Burgan UNK is its exceptionally early main crop. In Fresno, California, fruit commonly begins ripening in July, making it one of the earliest premium figs in the orchard. This early ripening habit allows growers in cooler climates a better opportunity to fully mature fruit before the end of the growing season.
The tree is vigorous, productive, and capable of producing excellent crops once established. Its combination of mystery, collector appeal, early ripening, and outstanding fruit quality has helped make Burgan UNK a sought-after variety among serious fig enthusiasts.
For growers seeking a unique collector fig with an interesting history, exceptional fruit quality, and one of the earliest main crops available, Burgan UNK is an excellent addition to any collection.
Recommended Growing Zones
USDA Zones 6-10
Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.
