Col de Dame Bordissotenca Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Col de Dame Bordissotenca is a rare and highly prized fig variety from Mallorca in the Balearic Islands of Spain. Preserved within the famous Montserrat Pons collection, this exceptional heirloom has gained a strong reputation among collectors for its outstanding berry flavor, remarkable productivity, and ability to produce premium-quality fruit on a relatively compact tree.

Unlike many vigorous fig varieties that require significant space, Col de Dame Bordissotenca combines moderate growth with exceptional fruit production. Mature trees often become heavily loaded with fruit, making it one of the more productive members of the renowned Col de Dame family.

The fruit is medium-sized with a classic pyriform shape and smooth, thin skin. As the figs ripen, the skin develops a greenish-yellow coloration that may show subtle browning and fine cracking. The fruit’s understated exterior hides what many collectors consider to be one of the finest tasting figs from Mallorca.

Inside, the fruit reveals an amber to light red interior with a juicy texture and concentrated flavor. The taste is dominated by rich berry notes layered with excellent sweetness and depth. Many enthusiasts consider Bordissotenca among the better tasting Col de Dame selections, with a flavor profile that rewards growers willing to allow the fruit to fully mature on the tree.

The fruit develops approximately 26° Brix under favorable conditions and gains significant complexity when allowed to hang until fully ripe. Patience is often rewarded with a richer, more concentrated berry experience.

Col de Dame Bordissotenca is primarily a uniferous variety, producing a single main crop. However, occasional breba production has been observed on some trees. The main crop typically ripens from early September through mid-October, depending on local climate conditions.

The tree exhibits medium to high vigor with a rounded canopy and sturdy branches. Although growth is manageable, the heavy fruit production can cause branches to bend under the weight of the crop. Many growers appreciate its ability to produce large harvests without requiring a massive tree.

As a common fig, Col de Dame Bordissotenca does not require pollination and produces fruit reliably in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of Mallorcan heritage, exceptional berry flavor, outstanding productivity, and collector appeal has helped establish Col de Dame Bordissotenca as one of the premier Spanish heirloom figs available today.

For growers seeking a rare Mallorcan fig with world-class flavor and heavy production, Col de Dame Bordissotenca is an outstanding addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 7-10

  • Rich berry flavor
  • Amber to light red interior
  • Approximately 26° Brix
  • Highly productive
  • Primarily single-crop variety
  • Occasional breba production possible
  • Common fig requiring no pollination
  • Rare Mallorcan heirloom from the Montserrat Pons collection

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
