Col de Dame Mutante, also known as CDD Mutante or Col de Dame Bicolor, is an ultra-premium Spanish heirloom fig variety discovered by a collector named Carlos in October 2016. It is believed to be a natural bud sport mutation of Col de Dame Noir , although some collectors speculate it may have originated from Col de Dame Blanc. I believe it is derived from Col de Dame Blanc. The reverted figs are identical.
This remarkable variety is widely considered one of the most visually striking figs in existence. Unlike most striped (rimada) figs that lose their striping as they ripen, Col de Dame Mutante does the opposite. The fruit begins as a solid green fig and gradually develops dramatic purple and dark red striping as it matures. At peak ripeness, the fruit becomes dark and richly colored while retaining its unique ornamental appearance.
True to the famous Col de Dame family, the fruit develops the distinctive elongated neck known as the “Collar of the Lady.” This elegant shape, combined with its unusual striping, makes it one of the most recognizable figs in any collection.
Inside, the pulp is a deep blood-red color with an exceptionally dense texture often compared to heavy jam or pancake batter. The flavor is intense, complex, and highly concentrated with rich berry, cherry, and strawberry notes. Many collectors consider Col de Dame Mutante to be among the elite dessert figs available today.

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.
During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.
During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.
Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.
