Lilla Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Lilla is a rare and highly sought-after Italian fig variety discovered by the collector known as Nikky. According to collector accounts, the original tree was found growing from the side of a wall, contributing to the mystery and appeal that surrounds this exceptional variety. Although some sources place its origin in Northern Italy and others in northern Sicily, Lilla has become recognized worldwide as a premier Italian collector fig.

This variety produces attractive small to medium-sized fruit with beautiful purple to nearly black skin and pronounced ribbing. The stems and veins often display striking purple coloration, adding additional ornamental value to the tree.

Inside, the fruit develops an amber to reddish-amber interior packed with sweetness and flavor. Lilla is especially known for its intense berry character combined with exceptionally high sugar content. The result is a rich, complex dessert fig that many collectors consider among the better tasting Italian varieties.

Lilla produces one crop each season, providing growers with a productive main crop. As a common fig, it does not require pollination and can reliably produce fruit in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

One of Lilla’s most valuable characteristics is its adaptability. The tree is vigorous, highly productive, and demonstrates excellent resistance to rain-related damage. The small eye and durable skin help reduce splitting and spoilage, allowing the fruit to maintain quality even during challenging weather conditions.

Despite its rarity, Lilla has developed a strong reputation for combining outstanding flavor with dependable production. Its combination of intense berry flavor, exceptional sweetness, rain resistance, and productivity has made it a favorite among serious fig collectors.

For growers seeking a rare Italian fig with outstanding berry flavor, excellent productivity, and strong weather resistance, Lilla is an exceptional addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 7-10

  • Produces both breba and main crops
  • Excellent rain resistance
  • Highly productive and vigorous
  • Suitable for cooler climates with winter protection
  • Performs well in humid growing regions

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
