Constantine de Algerie, commonly abbreviated as CDA, is an exceptional Algerian fig variety prized for its outstanding productivity, beautiful honey-colored fruit, and remarkable reliability. Over the years, it has become one of the most dependable and rewarding figs in my collection.
Originally from Algeria, this variety has proven itself exceptionally well in hot summer climates and consistently produces high-quality fruit even under challenging growing conditions.
The fruit is medium to large in size and often develops a distinctive flattened or donut-like shape. Individual figs can become surprisingly large, with some fruit reaching well over 150 grams under ideal growing conditions.
The skin ripens to a beautiful golden yellow color, making the fruit easy to identify and highly attractive on the tree. When sliced open, the interior reveals thick amber flesh loaded with sweet syrup and rich fig flavor.
The flavor is classic honey fig at its best. CDA produces intensely sweet fruit with a rich honey profile, smooth texture, and excellent balance. Fully ripened figs become thick, syrupy, and incredibly satisfying fresh off the tree.
One of the most impressive characteristics of Constantine de Algerie is its productivity. Mature trees can become covered with fruit and continue ripening figs over an extended period. In warm climates, my friends often observe a prolonged harvest season that extends well beyond many other varieties. Lasts for months!
The fruit features a relatively closed eye, helping reduce problems with insects, souring, and spoilage. A lot of times honey seals the eye. It is also highly resistant to splitting, making it an excellent choice for growers who want dependable crops year after year.
The tree itself is vigorous, easy to grow, and adaptable to a variety of conditions. It performs exceptionally well in hot climates such as California’s Central Valley and has become one of the most reliable producers in my orchard.
CDA grows well in containers or directly in the ground and rewards growers with heavy crops once established.
As a common fig, Constantine de Algerie does not require pollination and reliably produces fruit in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.
