Description

Manressa (Manresa Llucmajorera) Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Manressa, also known as Manresa Llucmajorera, is a highly regarded Spanish fig variety originating from the Llucmajor region of Mallorca, Spain. Preserved and cultivated by renowned Mallorcan fig expert Montserrat Pons (MP), this heirloom variety is especially valued for its exceptionally early ripening season and dependable production.

Among the hundreds of fig varieties grown on Mallorca, Manressa has earned recognition as one of the earliest ripening cultivars, making it particularly valuable for growers seeking fresh figs at the beginning of the season.

The fruit is medium-sized with attractive dark purple to nearly black skin often covered with subtle speckling. The figs are generally spherical to slightly conical in shape and develop an appealing appearance as they mature.

Inside, the fruit reveals a beautiful light red interior with a juicy, tender texture. Unlike many intensely rich berry figs, Manressa offers a more delicate and refined flavor profile. The taste combines pleasant sweetness with subtle berry notes and hints of peach, creating a refreshing and enjoyable eating experience.

Manressa is a biferous variety, producing both an early breba crop and a main crop. The breba crop begins ripening in early summer, often around June, while the main crop follows from August into September. This extended harvest season allows growers to enjoy fresh figs over a longer period than many single-crop varieties.

The tree exhibits moderate vigor with a somewhat compact growth habit and spreading canopy. Once established, it is capable of producing medium to high yields and has proven to be a reliable performer in Mediterranean climates and regions with similar growing conditions.

As a common fig, Manressa does not require pollination and produces fruit reliably in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of Mallorcan heritage, exceptionally early ripening, dual-crop production, and pleasant flavor has helped establish Manressa as a valuable variety for both collectors and home growers.

For growers seeking one of the earliest ripening Spanish figs with dependable production and a long harvest season, Manressa is an excellent addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 7-10

  • One of the earliest ripening Mallorcan figs
  • Produces both breba and main crops
  • Light red interior
  • Sweet flavor with berry and peach notes
  • Medium to high productivity
  • Common fig requiring no pollination
  • From the Montserrat Pons (MP) collection

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
