Thermalito Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Thermalito is a rare California seedling fig that has quickly gained a reputation among collectors for its exceptional flavor, early ripening season, and beautiful combination of bright green skin and deep red pulp. Considered one of the better California seedling discoveries in recent years, Thermalito delivers outstanding berry flavor while maintaining excellent performance in hot summer climates.

The variety traces its origins to a historic California estate where numerous old fig trees and seedlings continued to grow long after the property fell into neglect. Discovered and preserved through the efforts of fig enthusiast Doug Scofield, Thermalito emerged as one of the most promising selections from this unique collection.

The fruit is large and round with attractive bright green skin that remains vibrant even as the fruit approaches peak ripeness. This green coloration offers an additional advantage by making the fruit less noticeable to birds compared to darker-colored varieties.

When sliced open, Thermalito reveals a stunning deep red interior filled with rich, jammy pulp. The striking contrast between the bright green exterior and dark red flesh makes this variety especially attractive.

The flavor is exceptional. Thermalito is known for its intense berry profile combined with excellent sweetness and a pleasant touch of tartness that adds complexity and balance. Many growers compare the flavor quality to some of the finest Adriatic-type figs, placing it among the elite berry-flavored varieties available.

Unlike some premium figs that struggle in extreme summer heat, Thermalito maintains excellent fruit quality even during hot weather. The fruit remains sweet, flavorful, and attractive throughout the growing season.

Another valuable characteristic is its resistance to splitting. Even during periods of summer rain or fluctuating moisture, the fruit tends to maintain its integrity and quality better than many comparable varieties.

Thermalito is primarily an early-ripening main crop variety, often beginning production as early as July and continuing through much of the summer season. Its early harvest period makes it especially valuable for growers looking to extend their fig season.

The tree itself is vigorous, easy to grow, and roots readily from cuttings. Attractive five-lobed leaves and strong growth make it both productive and ornamental in the landscape.

The variety thrives in California-style climates with warm summers and mild winters but adapts well to many fig-growing regions with adequate sunlight and well-drained soil.

As a common fig, Thermalito does not require pollination and reliably produces fruit in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of California heritage, early ripening, deep red pulp, exceptional berry flavor, and heat tolerance has helped establish Thermalito as one of the most exciting American seedling figs available today.

For growers seeking an early-ripening berry fig with outstanding flavor and proven California performance, Thermalito is an exceptional addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 8-10

  • Rare California seedling discovery
  • Common fig requiring no pollination
  • Bright green skin
  • Deep red interior
  • Intense berry flavor
  • Pleasant tart complexity
  • Early ripening season
  • Heat tolerant
  • Resistant to splitting
  • Excellent collector variety

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
