Description
A Sangue Fig Cutting
Type: Smyrna Fig (Requires Pollination)
About This Variety
A Sangue is a unique Italian fig variety prized for its distinctive flavor, vigorous growth, and excellent productivity. Unlike common figs, A Sangue is a Smyrna-type fig and requires pollination by the fig wasp in order to produce mature fruit.
This variety produces beautiful yellow figs with rich red pulp and a flavor profile that stands apart from many other figs. The taste combines sweetness with a pleasant acidity and pronounced berry characteristics, creating a complex and memorable eating experience. Many growers appreciate A Sangue for its balance of sweetness and acidity rather than pure sugar content alone.
A Sangue is considered an early-ripening variety and is capable of producing heavy crops once established. The tree is extremely vigorous and grows quickly, making it an excellent choice for growers looking for a productive and fast-growing fig tree.
Because it requires pollination, A Sangue is best suited for areas where the fig wasp is present. However, many fig enthusiasts successfully hand-pollinate Smyrna varieties, allowing this exceptional fig to be grown and fruited outside traditional fig wasp regions.
Its unique flavor, vigorous growth, and heavy production have helped make A Sangue a desirable variety among collectors and growers interested in pollinated figs.
Recommended Growing Zones
USDA Zones 9-10
Important: A Sangue requires pollination by the fig wasp to produce mature fruit. In areas where the fig wasp is not present, fruit will typically drop before ripening unless manually pollinated.
Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Many fig enthusiasts successfully grow Smyrna figs outside their recommended zones by growing trees in containers and providing winter protection. Hand pollination can also allow growers outside fig wasp regions to enjoy varieties that would otherwise be difficult to fruit.
You Will Receive
- One unrooted fig cutting
- Approximately 6-8 inches long
- Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
- Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
- Taken from a healthy, mature tree
Seasonal Appearance
During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.
During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.
Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.
Rooting Instructions
Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.
Propagation Disclaimer
Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.
While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.
Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.
Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
