Description
Moscatel Branco Fig Cutting
Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)
About This Variety
Moscatel Branco is an outstanding Portuguese heirloom fig originating from the Algarve and Lisbon regions of Portugal. Often preserved and shared among Portuguese families for generations, this treasured variety has earned a reputation as one of the finest honey-type figs available.
This variety produces medium-sized, pyriform-shaped fruit with skin ranging from yellowish-green to deep green as it matures. Unlike many traditional honey figs that feature amber flesh, Moscatel Branco develops a beautiful rich red to pink interior with hints of violet, creating a striking contrast when cut open.
The flavor is what truly sets this variety apart. Moscatel Branco delivers an exceptionally sweet, jammy eating experience with a deep, complex honey flavor that goes far beyond the simple sweetness found in many sugar figs. The fruit possesses a rich “figgy” honey character that has made it a favorite among collectors and growers who appreciate premium dessert figs.
When fully ripe, the fruit often develops a thick syrupy drop at the eye. This characteristic is associated with its synonym, Pingo de Mel, which translates to “Honey Drop.” The tight, closed eye helps protect the fruit from spoilage while allowing sugars to concentrate as the figs mature.
Moscatel Branco is a common-type fig and does not require pollination to produce fruit. The tree reliably produces two crops, including a small breba crop in early summer followed by an exceptionally heavy and productive main crop.
Although it originated in the warm Mediterranean climate of Portugal, Moscatel Branco has proven to be surprisingly cold hardy and early ripening. Its ability to mature fruit ahead of autumn frosts has made it especially popular among growers in colder regions and short-season climates.
The tree is vigorous, productive, and dependable. Its combination of heavy production, outstanding flavor, early ripening, and adaptability has helped establish Moscatel Branco as one of the premier Portuguese heirloom figs available today.
For growers seeking a productive, cold-tolerant honey fig with a rich red interior and exceptional sweetness, Moscatel Branco is an outstanding addition to any collection.
Recommended Growing Zones
USDA Zones 6-10
Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.
You Will Receive
- One unrooted fig cutting
- Approximately 6-8 inches long
- Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
- Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
- Taken from a healthy, mature tree
Seasonal Appearance
During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.
During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.
Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.
Rooting Instructions
Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.
Propagation Disclaimer
Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.
While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.
Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.
Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
