Campaniere Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Campaniere is an exceptional French fig variety renowned for its outstanding cold hardiness, early ripening fruit, and dependable productivity. Originally preserved and shared by Thierry Demarquest of Figues du Monde, this remarkable variety has become a favorite among growers in cooler climates who want premium fig quality without sacrificing winter survival.

Originating from the Lot region of France, Campaniere descends from trees that have survived for over a century in challenging conditions. Its reputation for cold tolerance was further recognized when it received the prestigious Rustica Award at the 2014 Festival of Autumn Plants in Saint-Jean de Beauregard, France.

One of Campaniere’s greatest strengths is its ability to thrive where many other fig varieties struggle. The tree develops well-lignified wood early in the season, allowing buds and branches to withstand cold temperatures, frost events, and fluctuating weather patterns. This characteristic has made it one of the most respected cold-hardy figs available.

The fruit is small to medium in size with an attractive elongated neck that makes harvesting easy. As it ripens, the skin develops yellow-green coloration, sometimes displaying purple blushes or subtle gray-blue hues in strong sunlight.

Inside, the fruit reveals an amber to reddish-pink interior with a rich, melting texture. The flesh is dense, jammy, and loaded with flavor while retaining a pleasant seed crunch.

Campaniere is especially prized for its honey-berry flavor profile. The fruit combines rich sweetness with berry notes and refreshing undertones, creating a well-balanced fig that appeals to both collectors and casual growers. The flavor develops quickly and intensely as the fruit reaches maturity.

Another standout characteristic is its rapid ripening. Once the fruit begins softening, it typically reaches peak ripeness within only a few days. This short hang time reduces losses from rain, insects, and wildlife while helping ensure consistent harvests.

The tree is highly productive and often sets fruit at nearly every node. Even young trees are capable of producing impressive crops, making Campaniere a rewarding variety for growers seeking both quality and quantity.

While primarily valued for its main crop, some trees may occasionally produce a breba crop under favorable conditions.

As a common fig, Campaniere does not require pollination and reliably produces fruit in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of French heritage, extreme cold hardiness, early ripening fruit, honey-berry flavor, and exceptional productivity has helped establish Campaniere as one of the finest fig varieties for growers in cooler climates.

For growers looking for a productive, flavorful, and highly cold-hardy fig, Campaniere is absolutely one to try.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 6-10

  • Award-winning French heirloom variety
  • Introduced by Thierry of Figues du Monde
  • One of the most cold-hardy figs available
  • Hardy to approximately -4°F with established trees
  • Yellow-green fruit with occasional purple blush
  • Amber to reddish-pink interior
  • Rich honey-berry flavor
  • Closed eye
  • Extremely productive
  • Early ripening
  • Common fig requiring no pollination

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
