Harry’s Crete Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Harry’s Crete is a rare Greek fig variety originating from the island of Crete and is highly regarded for its large fruit, intense berry flavor, and unique hint of citrus acidity. This exceptional fig was brought to the United States by a Greek immigrant and has gradually earned a reputation as one of the more desirable Mediterranean collector varieties.

The variety is especially prized for its outstanding flavor profile. While many berry figs focus purely on sweetness, Harry’s Crete combines rich berry notes with a subtle touch of lemon-like acidity that adds brightness and complexity to the fruit. The result is a well-balanced fig that keeps you coming back for another bite.

The fruit is medium to large in size and typically develops green to yellow skin as it ripens. Some fruit may show natural blemishing or color variation, which is common among premium Mediterranean fig varieties and does not affect quality.

When sliced open, Harry’s Crete reveals a beautiful deep red interior filled with dense, syrupy pulp. The flesh develops a rich jam-like texture with excellent sweetness and concentrated flavor.

The flavor is exceptional. Rich berry notes dominate the experience, supported by a pleasant citrus-like brightness that enhances the fruit’s complexity. The dense pulp and subtle seed crunch create a premium fresh-eating fig that stands out from many traditional varieties.

The fruit is thin-skinned and highly enjoyable fresh but is also excellent for preserves, jams, and other culinary uses. Fully ripened fruit develops outstanding sweetness while maintaining its unique flavor balance.

The tree itself is vigorous and productive, producing attractive pear-shaped fruit with a small neck. The foliage is characterized by attractive five-lobed leaves that add ornamental appeal to the landscape.

Harry’s Crete primarily produces a main crop during the summer months, although some growers may observe additional fruit production under ideal growing conditions and long seasons.

The variety performs best in warm climates with well-drained soil and full sun exposure. Like many Mediterranean figs, it appreciates warm summers that allow fruit to fully develop its sugars and flavor.

Historically, the original mother tree received winter protection in colder climates, suggesting that growers in colder regions may benefit from container culture or winter protection methods.

As a common fig, Harry’s Crete does not require pollination and reliably produces fruit in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of Greek heritage, large fruit, deep red pulp, intense berry flavor, and subtle lemon notes has helped establish Harry’s Crete as one of the most intriguing collector figs available today.

For growers seeking a rare Mediterranean fig with outstanding flavor and unique complexity, Harry’s Crete is an exceptional addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 8-10

  • Rare Greek heirloom variety
  • Originated on the island of Crete
  • Common fig requiring no pollination
  • Large green to yellow fruit
  • Deep red jammy interior
  • Intense berry flavor
  • Unique lemon-like acidity
  • Thin skin with excellent texture
  • Excellent fresh-eating fig
  • Vigorous and productive grower

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
