Reculver Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Reculver is an ancient and highly distinctive fig variety with historical roots dating back to the 19th century. The variety is believed to have originated from a fig found growing on a wall near the village of Reculver in Kent, England. Over time, it has remained a relatively rare collector’s fig prized for its unique appearance, excellent flavor, and fascinating history.

One of the most unusual characteristics of Reculver is the variability in its fruit. Growers often report that no two figs taste exactly alike, with different fruit from the same tree expressing slightly different flavor nuances. This unique characteristic has led many enthusiasts to describe Reculver as having a “fruit salad” flavor profile.

The fruit is typically medium-sized with gray-green skin accented by purple coloration. Many figs develop unusual, whimsical shapes with the eye frequently positioned off to one side, giving the fruit a distinctive appearance unlike most common fig varieties.

Inside, Reculver develops a soft, jammy interior with a small honey-filled cavity. The flavor is rich, sweet, fruity, and complex. Notes of mixed fruit, honey, and berry characteristics often combine to create an outstanding eating experience that has earned the variety a devoted following among collectors.

As a common fig, Reculver does not require pollination and is capable of producing fruit in areas where the fig wasp is not present. The tree is productive, adaptable, and performs well in a variety of climates.

The leaves are large and deeply lobed, adding ornamental value to the tree even when fruit is not present. Combined with its unique fruit shape and historical significance, Reculver stands out as one of the more interesting heirloom fig varieties available today.

Its combination of ancient history, unusual appearance, collector appeal, and complex flavor has helped establish Reculver as a highly desirable variety among serious fig enthusiasts.

For growers seeking a rare heirloom fig with a fascinating history and a truly unique flavor experience, Reculver is an outstanding addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 7-10

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
