Maroc 23 Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Maroc 23 is a highly sought-after Moroccan fig variety known for its exceptionally large fruit, rich berry flavor, and remarkable resistance to splitting. Originally collected in Morocco and preserved within the Conservatoire Botanique de Porquerolles in France, this outstanding cultivar has gained a strong reputation among collectors for its combination of beauty, flavor, and productivity.

The fruit is impressively large, often weighing between 70 and 100 grams. Its distinctive drop-shaped form with a rounded bottom gives the variety an elegant appearance, making it one of the more visually striking figs in a collection.

As the fruit ripens, the skin develops deep reddish-purple to nearly black coloration. Many fruits display attractive white speckling that can form a subtle star-like pattern across the surface, adding to the variety’s ornamental appeal.

Inside, the fruit reveals a deep red interior with a dense, jammy texture. The flesh is rich, smooth, and syrupy, occasionally displaying amber highlights that enhance its beautiful appearance when cut open.

Maroc 23 is especially prized for its flavor. The fruit develops exceptional sweetness balanced by rich berry notes and mild acidity. The result is a complex, fragrant fig with outstanding fresh-eating quality. Many growers consider it one of the better large-fruited berry figs available.

One of the variety’s most desirable traits is its resistance to splitting. Even in warm, humid conditions where many premium figs struggle, Maroc 23 maintains excellent fruit quality, helping growers enjoy reliable harvests with minimal losses.

The tree is productive, vigorous, and attractive, producing large seven-lobed leaves that add ornamental value to the landscape. Mature trees can reach 8 to 10 feet in height but are easily maintained through pruning or container culture.

Once established, trees often begin producing fruit within one to two years and are capable of yielding 10 to 20 pounds or more of fruit annually under favorable growing conditions.

The fruit is excellent for fresh eating, preserves, drying, and other culinary uses where its rich flavor and jammy texture can be fully appreciated.

As a common fig, Maroc 23 does not require pollination and reliably produces fruit in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of Moroccan heritage, giant fruit size, exceptional sweetness, and excellent rain resistance has helped establish Maroc 23 as one of the most desirable collector figs available today.

For growers seeking a large, productive fig with outstanding flavor and proven performance, Maroc 23 is an exceptional addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 7-10

  • Rare Moroccan heirloom variety
  • Preserved in the Porquerolles collection
  • Very large fruit, often 70-100 grams
  • Deep purple to nearly black skin
  • Deep red interior
  • Rich berry flavor
  • Dense jammy texture
  • Excellent resistance to splitting
  • Highly productive
  • Common fig requiring no pollination

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
