Tavout Jabout Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Tavout Jabout is a rare Algerian fig variety prized for its unique appearance, rich honey flavor, and vigorous growth habit. Originally brought from Algeria to the San Francisco Bay Area by an Algerian native, this exceptional cultivar has gradually gained recognition among collectors for its beauty, productivity, and outstanding fruit quality.

One look at Tavout Jabout and it’s easy to understand why collectors seek it out. The fruit develops a distinctive long neck attached to a rounded body, creating an elegant shape unlike many traditional fig varieties.

As the fruit ripens, the skin develops beautiful red coloration across the body while the neck retains attractive yellow tones. The striking red-to-yellow gradient gives the fruit a sunset-like appearance that makes it one of the most visually appealing figs in any collection.

When sliced open, Tavout Jabout reveals a dense, sticky red interior packed with flavor. The pulp is rich and substantial, developing a luxurious texture that rewards growers who allow the fruit to fully mature on the tree.

The flavor is exceptional. Tavout Jabout is known for its rich honey profile with deep sweetness and concentrated sugars. The dense flesh provides an intense eating experience that has made this variety increasingly popular among collectors looking for premium honey-type figs.

The fruit features a soft, completely edible skin and a tightly closed eye, helping to protect fruit quality as it ripens. The closed eye also contributes to its attractive appearance and helps reduce issues associated with open-eyed varieties.

The tree itself is extremely vigorous and establishes quickly once planted. Strong growth and healthy branching make it an excellent choice for growers looking for a productive tree capable of producing quality fruit year after year.

Tavout Jabout primarily produces a single main crop and performs best in climates with hot, dry summers and mild winters. In regions similar to California’s Central Valley, the variety can develop exceptional sweetness and flavor.

The tree can be grown successfully in containers or planted directly in the ground, making it adaptable for both collectors and home gardeners.

As a common fig, Tavout Jabout does not require pollination and reliably produces fruit in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of Algerian heritage, unique sunset-colored fruit, dense honey-flavored pulp, and vigorous growth has helped establish Tavout Jabout as one of the more distinctive collector figs available today.

For growers seeking a rare fig with outstanding appearance and rich honey flavor, Tavout Jabout is an exceptional addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 8-10

  • Rare Algerian heirloom variety
  • Common fig requiring no pollination
  • Distinctive long-necked fruit
  • Beautiful red skin with yellow neck
  • Sunset-like coloration
  • Dense red interior
  • Rich honey flavor
  • Closed eye
  • Extremely vigorous growth
  • Excellent collector variety

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
