Deos Negra Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Deos Negra is a rare Italian fig variety originating from the historic collection of Nicolo “Nikky” Parrino. This attractive heirloom has gained popularity among collectors for its reliable production, excellent honey-sweet flavor, and ability to produce both breba and main crops.

The fruit is medium-sized, typically weighing around 50 grams, with an elegant oblong shape. As the figs mature, the skin develops a dark purple to black coloration often accented by subtle yellow blushing near the neck. This attractive contrast gives the fruit a distinctive appearance that stands out among many dark fig varieties.

Inside, the fruit reveals a beautiful amber to red interior with a juicy texture and relatively few seeds. The pulp develops excellent sweetness and a smooth consistency that makes it highly enjoyable for fresh eating.

The flavor profile is one of Deos Negra’s greatest strengths. Rich honey sweetness forms the foundation of the taste, while subtle berry undertones add complexity and depth. The combination creates a well-balanced dessert fig that appeals to both honey fig enthusiasts and growers who appreciate a touch of berry character.

One of the most desirable features of Deos Negra is its dependable dual-crop production. The tree produces an early breba crop on the previous season’s wood, followed by a productive main crop later in the season. This extended harvest period allows growers to enjoy fresh figs over a longer portion of the year.

The tree is productive and well suited for backyard orchards, collector gardens, and container growing. It performs especially well in warm Mediterranean climates such as California’s Central Valley, where long summers allow the fruit to develop excellent flavor and sugar content.

As a common fig, Deos Negra does not require pollination and produces fruit reliably in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of Italian heritage, dual-crop production, attractive fruit, and rich honey flavor has helped establish Deos Negra as a desirable collector variety.

For growers seeking a productive Italian fig with excellent honey sweetness and reliable harvests, Deos Negra is an outstanding addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 7-10

  • Produces breba and main crops
  • Rich honey flavor with berry undertones
  • Amber to red interior
  • Medium-sized fruit
  • Productive and reliable
  • Common fig requiring no pollination
  • Rare Italian heirloom variety

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
