Moulianat Fig Cutting

Type: Common Fig (Does Not Require Pollination)

About This Variety

Moulianat, sometimes spelled Moulinat, is a rare and highly desirable fig variety originating from the region where North Africa meets the Mediterranean Sea. Considered an ancient heirloom, this exceptional fig has gained a reputation among collectors for its impressive fruit size, outstanding flavor, cold tolerance, and reliable production.

Moulianat is often associated with the famous Dalmatie family of figs, sharing many of the characteristics that have made those varieties popular among growers worldwide. The tree produces distinctive leaves with long finger-like lobes and develops into a vigorous, productive specimen capable of producing abundant harvests.

The fruit is exceptionally large and attractive, featuring green to yellow skin that brightens as it ripens. The impressive size and beautiful coloration make Moulianat stand out among collector varieties.

Inside, the fruit reveals a rich red interior with a sticky, succulent texture. The flesh is dense, juicy, and highly satisfying, offering excellent fresh-eating quality when allowed to fully mature on the tree.

The flavor is one of the variety’s greatest strengths. Moulianat combines classic honey fig sweetness with subtle fruity berry notes, creating a balanced and refined flavor profile. The sweetness is rich without becoming overpowering, making it appealing to both honey fig enthusiasts and growers who enjoy more complex flavor characteristics.

Moulianat is an early-ripening variety with an extended harvest period, allowing growers to enjoy fresh fruit over a longer season. As trees mature, the fruit often increases in both size and quality, rewarding growers with increasingly impressive harvests year after year.

The tree is fast-growing, vigorous, and highly productive. It adapts well to in-ground planting and container culture and has demonstrated excellent cold tolerance compared to many Mediterranean fig varieties. Its hardiness and productivity make it suitable for a wide range of climates.

As a common fig, Moulianat does not require pollination and produces fruit reliably in areas where the fig wasp is not present.

Its combination of ancient heritage, enormous fruit size, honey-rich flavor, cold hardiness, and dependable productivity has helped establish Moulianat as a highly sought-after collector variety.

For growers seeking a rare fig with exceptional size, excellent flavor, and proven performance, Moulianat is an outstanding addition to any collection.

Recommended Growing Zones

USDA Zones 7-10

  • Rare North African heirloom
  • Exceptionally large fruit
  • Green to yellow skin
  • Rich red interior
  • Honey flavor with subtle berry notes
  • Early ripening with extended harvest
  • Vigorous and highly productive
  • Common fig requiring no pollination

Don’t let the growing zones discourage you. Fig trees can be successfully grown in containers and many growers enjoy fresh figs well outside the recommended zones. Growing in a pot allows you to move the tree to a protected location during winter and control its size. With proper care and winter protection, many fig varieties can be grown and fruited outside their listed growing zones.

You Will Receive

  • One unrooted fig cutting
  • Approximately 6-8 inches long
  • Minimum of 3 buds (nodes)
  • Thickness will typically range from Sharpie-marker size or larger unless otherwise noted in the listing
  • Taken from a healthy, mature tree

Seasonal Appearance

During the winter months, cuttings will typically be fully dormant.

During the fall, cuttings may still be lignified (hardened woody growth) and may not yet be fully dormant. This is normal and does not affect their ability to root.

Wood color, thickness, bud spacing, and appearance will naturally vary from cutting to cutting. Certain varieties naturally produce thinner or thicker wood than others.

Rooting Instructions

Rooting instructions are included in the listing photos. Please review them before purchasing.

Propagation Disclaimer

Rooting success depends on many factors including temperature, humidity, rooting method, growing medium, sanitation, and grower experience.

While fig cuttings are generally considered easy to propagate, no rooting success can be guaranteed. Even experienced growers may experience occasional losses.

Most growers can expect a rooting success rate of approximately 60% to 80% under proper conditions. Individual results may vary.

Because rooting conditions are beyond our control after delivery, we cannot offer refunds, replacements, or credits for cuttings that fail to root.
